Main Task: Evaluation (Liam Taylor)




For all of the 9 frames here the order goes from:

·         Row 1: Frames 1-3

·         Row 2: Frames 4-6

·         Row 3: Frames 7-9

Frame 1

The Warner Bros production logo appears at the start of the film, but we hear the bridging sound of what can only be described as a male character speaking in an echoing room. We also hear the echo of footsteps coming closer to the microphone.  The Warner Bros. Pictures logo also displays the fact that the company is a part of the AOL Time Warner Company. The font and image used in the title is really iconic and a lot of people will instantly recognise them due to the size and reputation of the company. The mysterious male voice and the echo of footsteps coming closer as the title is being displayed interacts with, and engages, the viewer straight away.

Frame 2

The second frame shown develops sound and mise-en-scene.  We hear the rattle of a metal sound which sounds like a prison cell being opened, we then hear a males voice say "Lets go face the wall" which is being said whilst the movies productions company is being presented. At first we see a pretty dark empty room with just a small wooden chair and a window. A character later appears dressed in a beige boiler suit. This sound and setting the audience is introduced to from the very start suggests to me that the first scene is set within a prison, this is then confirmed when a female voice states "The purpose of this hearing to to determine whether or not you're likely to break the law again" matching the genre of the film which is crime.

Frame 3
In the third frame the main character is introduced through a mid shot  Daniel Ocean, we know this because he is asked to "state his name for the record" to which he replies with "Daniel Ocean" this creates characterization. We gather the fact that Daniel Ocean is the main character of the film as we are presented with his name right from the very start, also the fact that the camera is focused on him and him only in the first frame right up until frame 5 suggests this to the audience, which shows vital importance within this character as he is privileged with all the shots only showing him all the way up to shot number 5, which suggests to the audience he may be a central character.  

Frame 4

Frame 4 shows a close up of Daniel Ocean, the camera is still focused on him and only him. The only difference is now the position of the camera is allowing the audience to look into his facial expressions and give more of a judgment and understanding.

Frame 5

Frame 5 is actually very important as it is a tracking shot of Daniel Ocean. The important aspect of this frame is that it tells the audience that Daniel Ocean was actually in fact in what can only be described as a prison, which explains the interrogation on Ocean in frames 3 and 4. Frame 5 helps to portray the genre of the film which is a crime thriller as prisons highly represent crime. Frame 5 also tells us that the first initial setting within 5 minutes of the film is within a prison.

Frame 6   

Frame 6 is the first frame that displays an in movie title, the title states “WARNERBROS.PICTURES PRESENTS” Once again WarnerBros.Pictures title is presented to us, this shows there vital importance within the film. The title stays consistently next to the main character Daniel Ocean as he is walking through the gates. Parts of the title is highlighted in bold so it stands out and catches your eye, to garb the audiences eye not just focused on Ocean  but on the incoming titles as well.

Frame 7

Frame 7 is another frame that displays an in movie title. The title states “IN ASSOCIATION WITH VILLAGEROADSHOWPICTURES ANDNPVENTERTAINMENT” This once again like frame 6 shows the vital importance of this company within its contributions to the film. Parts of the title is highlighted in bold so it stands out and catches your eye, to garb the audiences eye not just focused on Ocean  but on the incoming titles as well.

Frame 8

Frame 8 is another frame that features a title which states “AJW/SECTIONEIGHT PRODUCTION” This once again like frame 6 and 7 shows the vital importance of this company within its contributions to the film. One of the main differences with this title is that the other titles presented within frames 6 and 7 were also features at the start whereas this title wasn’t, which suggests that this company did not have as much of an influence within the film than the other two companies presented at the start.

Frame 9

Frame 9 is another frame that features a title, however this title is different to those presented in frames 6, 7 and 8 as it does not display or promote a company but it displays the name of the film which is “Ocean’s Eleven” The title is presented quite interestingly as it is in the same font size as the other titles in the bottom right hand corner. The title is presented on a black screen which fades into what can only be described as a large city being viewed out at sea











Frame 1

The first frame is a productions company title. Like the Warner Bros. Pictures title in Ocean’s Eleven we try to engage out audience with sound and animation, however we took a different approach. We used more of an eye catching animation that displayed lots of bright light and movements which really the audiences eye, alongside this we used the same echo effect used in Ocean’s Eleven but put our own twist to it. We used an upbeat soundtrack which had an echo effect, to try and engage the audience into the title in the same way that Warner Bros. Pictures did in Ocean’s Eleven. The Warner Bros. Pictures in Ocean’s Eleven displayed the title text with an animation which was fade in, we tried to achieve something similar but different The Warner Bros. Pictures title was more elegant with it animation to the company logo whereas we took more of an eye-catching explosive displaying lots of bright colours and transitions which then shows the company logo “Eqinox Productions” he title is formatted as bold to further reach the audiences eye.

Frame 2

Frame 2 is another title that presents the distributions company within the film. The title is a more relaxed and calm title than the one of frame 1. However like frame 1 the title consist of colours that are bright and stand out, to help towards grabbing the audiences eye we used the fade in and fade out transitions. The title is formatted as bold to further reach the audiences eye.

Frame 3

Frame 3 is the first frame that shows an in movie title, the title states “Eqinox Productions Present” you may notice that this is a similar convention of the titles shown in Ocean’s Eleven and specifically in the Ocean’s Eleven 9 frame collage as frame number 6. This title is used to show the importance that Eqinox Productions has within the feature film. Another convention which we took inspiration from Ocean’s Eleven is the key focus right from the start on the main character, we tried to achieve this through only seeing one character between frames 3-5

Frame 4

Frame 4 is the second frame that features an in movie title, the title stating “In association with Monster House Productions & Waveshock Pictures” you may notice that this is a similar convention of the titles shown in Ocean’s Eleven and specifically in the Ocean’s Eleven 9 frame collage as frame number 7. This title is used to show the importance that Eqinox Productions has within the feature film. Another convention which we took inspiration from Ocean’s Eleven is the key focus right from the start on the main character, we tried to achieve this through only seeing one character between frames 3-5

Frame 5

Frame 5 is the third frame that features an in movie title, the title stating “A JBWRSIX Production” you may notice that this is a similar convention of the titles shown in Ocean’s Eleven and specifically in the Ocean’s Eleven 9 frame collage as frame number 8. This title is used to show the importance that Eqinox Productions has within the feature film. Another convention which we took inspiration from Ocean’s Eleven is the key focus right from the start on the main character, we tried to achieve this through only seeing one character between frames 3-5

Frame 6

Frame six is the fourth frame showing a title, however it is the most important title during the feature film. The title is frame 6 is a title of the movie titles name which in this case shows the title “Smash ‘N’ Grab” We took inspiration from one of the titles in the 9 frame collage of Ocean’s Eleven which was frame number 9. Frame number 9 shows a title displaying “Ocean’s Eleven” in text within the right hand corner. The title in frame number 9 starts off at a black screen then later fades into a city, we really liked the black screen title effect and used it but in our own way. Instead of having the title in small text at the bottom right side we through it would be best to have it in much larger text and in the middle to make it really stand out to the audience. We also used the “HACKED” font as it portrays our genre of a crime feature film.

Frame 7

Frame 7 is an interesting frame to look at as it is out of the ordinary. First off instead of having to cut between the two characters at this part of the feature film includes a split screen to show the two characters at the same time. Ocean’s Eleven uses a prison at the start of their film to further show the genre which is crime, we used this convention but in our own way by creating what appears to the audience as CCTV cameras. CCTV footage is heavily represents crime and the use of less frames per second also enthuses this. The CCTV footage shows the two characters in an elevator speaking on their mobile phones and neatening up their hair, this was used to portray the age range of the characters which is elder teenagers.

Frame 8

Frame 8 is the first frame that shows the character Koby Johnson clearly for the first time.

Question 2:  How does your product represent particular social groups?


During our opening the characters consist of young males, this is because we felt we could put a twist on most of the other social groups featured in films of a similar genre to us (heist and crime) Instead of having the typical wise, experienced middle-aged men we choose to base our characters upon the social group of young men between the ages of 16-19. The preferred for this representation is other young adults or late teenagers of the ages 16-19 as they can relate to the characters more so than people of another social group. We represent this through the fashion sense of the two young men features in our two minute opening. The characters in our main task are walking to meet each other, people of our targeted social group can relate to this as for many people of the social group walking is the main form of transport as many cannot drive yet. The activity of the characters is typical of the social group for example keeping up-to-date in terms of fashion and walking to meet each other, another typical activity we presented to represent the social group was checking and styling their hair. Young men typically take more pride in their appearance than a few other social groups such as middle aged men. The two young men shown in our main task are starting to conform to genre expectations in the way that they met in a location where no one else was which portrays secrecy, this convention is used in many heist films. This social group is present to show the activities and conventions related to the social group and the fact that the group can get up to atypical behavior such as planning a heist. The purpose of the chosen social group is to show and convey to the audience that not all people within the social group are cruel and act like a thug. By the presence of the two characters it shows that young men can be smart and mature as well as portraying our social group. The two characters are walking to meet in an empty car park, this location shows that the social group may not have the same sort of facilities as other social groups such as a secret room or hideout, they have to take care of business within the view of the public, but still in a secretive location. Both characters wore different clothing but of a similar style for example both characters were wearing jeans but of a different style as Swartz (blonde male) was wearing black skinny jeans, long khaki green parka coat and Nike Janoski Max trainers, similar but different to the picture on the left. However Koby (black male) was wearing blue jeans of a looser fit, black mountain jacket and black boots. Our costumes differ to our influential film Ocean’s Eleven as the men in Ocean’s Eleven are of a much older age and different social group. Another way we tried to represent our social group throughout the opening was during the elevator part of our opening where we witness the two young males looking at themselves in the mirror, styling their hair. This represents the social group of young male (16-19) as many young males stereo-typically will often take more pride and care with their appearance than someone of a much older social group. Another small way in which we represent our social group in the opening is the fact that the two characters were walking to the location of which they meet. Stereotypically not many young men between the ages of 16-19 will drive cars, we tried to hint and implement this into our opening.

Question 4: Who would be the audience for your media product? 




Our Media product is likely to attract a age audiences from the ages of 15-24 as they are the most common age group that like action and crime films as studies by the MPAA. MPAA also shows us that the majority of our audience is likely going to be of the male gender, this is because women prefer drama rather than crime and action.

About Samuel: Owen is a young 17 year old male. He has a passionate love for house music and even produces his own mixes, when his not creating a new mix he plays video games whilst listening to music. His favorite games are GTA 5 and Battlefield 4. Alongside these interests Owen in his free time likes to watch action films and in particular heist films such as The Italian Job but his all-time favorite is The Bank Job. The reason Owen would like our film is because it fits very much into his chosen genre and the fact that the story is based around characters of the same age group as him.

I think our film would appeal to Owen, as he seems to be a stereotypical young male, who enjoys experiencing lots of action and excitement. If we were to show this at him at the local cinema I personally think it would appeal to him and he would purchase a ticket
Q5. How did you attract/address your audience?


Question: 6) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?


 Top left: The top left is my own personal USB memory stick, I used this to save the film opening during the editing stage and when it came to supplying. I didn't really learn anything whilst using this as I've used memory sticks for years and there was nothing more I needed to know.
Top Middle: This was the camera we used to record our main task with. During the filming process although my role didn't involve being cinematographer I did learn something. I often helped out with the thinking of shots to use in certain situations and learnt a variety of camera shots that could be put into good use.
Top left: The tripod you see in the top left is the tripod we used during the filming stage. I learnt how to properly assemble and disassemble the tripod effectively.
Centre left: These are the headphone I used during the editing stage of the main task, it was essential to use good headphones so we could make sure our audio is on point without any issues. I didn't really learn anything when it came to this as I have had years of experience with headphones and had nothing more to learn.
Centre middle: This is the PC I used to edit and complete the main task. It was a high powered computer with the right specifications for the job, I didn't really learn anything when it came to this technology as I've used computers from a very early age and know what I'm capable of when using them.
Centre right: This is an SD card used in the camera to store all of the unedited footage of the main task. When using this I learnt how to correctly insert the SD into the camera and how to get the footage from the SD and on to the computer to be edited.
Bottom left: This is an audio set which we didn't really use. We originally had a voiceover that we was going to use in our main  task but we scraped it. However I did learn something from using this technology such as how to record high quality audio and how to set the microphone up with the correct levels and settings.
Bottom right: This is the editing software I used during the editing stage of our main task. I have had experience of this software in the past so I didn't really learn much but I did learn how to create a split screen used in the CCTV footage part of our main task.

Q7 Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Looking back at the preliminary task that my group and I completed at the start of the year, I feel I have learnt a lot and my group has made some very good advancements since then. Click the link below for more detail.
