Individual Analysis:The Italian Job (2003)

Individual Analysis of The Italian Job (2003)

Titles

00:00-00:08- the name of the film is straight at the beginning this can be effective as it draws the audience’s attention in right from the start, this is different to the way films are normally done as the production companies name and associate production customers are shown first.

00:08-00:26:-we see the trademark paramount production stars and we finally see the production companies name, we also see their trademark camera pan as the camera moves down from a high angle position, the title is on the screen for a very long time and this can emphasize its importance.

00:26-00:32- we again see the name of paramount pictures but just the words below a running commentary of pictures.

00:32-00:40- we see another picture now and below we see the name of another production company called DE LINE PICTURES and they are shown second because they are owned by paramount pictures and worked with them in creating this film.

00:40-00:44- we see another picture that is flashed over from the right of the screen to the left and at the bottom we are able to see the name of the director of the film which in this case is F.Gary Gray.

00:44-00:48- the titles seem to have come to a 4 second spacing now and we are no able to see the name of the main character which is Mark Walhberg again with a picture flashing over the top but this time from the bottom of the screen towards the top of it.

00:48-01:03- we see two more names accompanied by the flashing images and pictures these names are Charlize Theron and Edward Norton we again see the name of the movie and it is now more emphasized as we now know who is involved in the film.

01:03-02:01- we see many more names again accompanied by flashing images and pictures displayed normally these names are less important to the first ones shown as they are the normally the most fundamental people in making this film, these names shown are 4 seconds apart meaning there has a planned spacing between them only the title of the movie and the production’s companies involved lasted longer this again was a planned way to emphasize their importance to the movie being made.
Mise-en-Scene
While each title to the movie is being played we see in the background pictures of places located in Milan, Italy and we, the audience, where exactly the movie is being made and gives the audience a little hint of what the movie could be about without giving to much away. We can also see when the titles are being played is a blueprint in which things are being written onto we see words such as ROUTE, MEN IN POSITION, BACK DOOR, FRONT DOOR ETC. This gives the audience a sense of what the whole movie is going to be about this can also bring the audience’s attention in straight away because we are able to see that there is something being planned and immediately want to know exactly what it is being planned, we see different parts of the blueprints as they are flashed across the screen behind the titles involved in the movie this keeps the audience interested as they are able to see something is being planned but because of the way it is shown sparingly the audience’s know a little about the film but not enough to lose interest. Parts of the blueprint are shown 4 seconds apart matching the timing of the titles.
Sound
00:00-00:26- we hear the trademark sound of the paramount pictures company and we then see their trademark logo with the trademark stars.

00:26-00:50- we are then able to hear faintly in the background accompanying the titles the sound of musical instruments playing this can add mysteriousness to the movie drawing in the audience’s attention in.

00:50-01:23- the music has now become louder and is being played at a faster pace this accompanied by more parts of the blueprint being revealed this can emphasize the importance of what is being shown by the blueprints this draws the  audience’s attention in even more meaning that they are not able to take their eyes off of the screen.

01:23-01:31- the drum is being beaten at a faster and heavier pace this can mean danger or action that is about to happen as the drum is normally used to signal rage, anger etc this again keeps the audience guessing as the music at the beginning was very slow and soulful but is now being played at a heavier and higher pace.

01:31-01:40- the drum beat is stopped again keeping the audience guessing as the music placed has slowed a little.

01:40-01:46-the music again is slowed.

01:46-02:00- the music seamlessly and explosively back into a higher paced and heavy beat as more revealing parts of the blueprint are shown this again manipulates the audience’s attention and keeps them interested.

Camerawork

00:26-02:00-as the titles are shown we can see a pushing in shot a low angle shot we see a few pans like right to left and bottom up to the top and we see a tracking shot each of these shots which are also kept in the frame well are effective because we see the blueprint being unveiled very effectively we can also see landmarks in the heart of Milan, Italy which again keep the audience interested in the film.

this film opening is very effective and keeps the audiences attention from the start all the way to the end which is the aim of every film and i hope that my group,s can be just as effective.

Junior- for the Main Task my role is not only actor, but I will also be a producer for the main task and I also helped locate the area (location scout) where we are going to film and was the main writer of the story we are going to use in the main task.

Liam- My job during the development of the main task will be lead editor, sound editor and producer. This is a very important job during the development of the main task as I’m responsible for cutting and trimming all the clips together alongside special FX and music. As producer one of my main tasks will be to take in the feedback we get from the pitch and to start taking action to improve the main task to the best of my ability.

Main Task: Target Audience

SMASH 'N' GRAB

Target Audience- 15+

Why we have chose this as our target audience?
We as a group have decided to make this age group our chosen and targeted audience because this is normally the age group that is interested in Crime&Action movies and so we as a group effectively decided that this would be the best age group to target.

before we decided that this was going to be our chosen target audience we did a lot of research into what age groups enjoy and what age groups especially enjoy Crime & Action  genre movies and through this research we were able to to find that the age group that are very fascinated with Crime and Action movies is the age group 15 and up through our research on various movie and cinema websites and found out that the most expenditure on Crime and Action genre films came from the age group 15+, even though we as a group have chosen this as our target audience we do also believe that our film can appeal to many other age groups and we believe that his film has attributes that can fit each and every age group and we feel that even though our film appeals to the 15+ age range we hope and believe it will be a hit amongst all age groups during the film we try to convey the image of young aspiring criminals through their actions.

Why does our film appeal to our target audience?
we as a group believe our USP(unique selling point) that makes our film different to other movies of the same genre is that the characters that are involved in the film is that are younger than most characters that are included and we feel because of the age gap between the gap and most crime & action films means that our more younger target audience can relate with the characters and build closer relationships with characters and have a felling of understanding with characters circumstances, obstacles etc.

Main Task: Prop and Costume Design

Smash and Grab

Costume and Prop List

Costume Designs

I have decided as the Lead costume designer that each character will have a different look but the main theme for each character’s style is ‘smart’ but each character has their own variation of smart and we feel this can show the audience through what they were wearing what kind of personality each character has and give the audience a feel of each character and enables them to build a relationship with each character.

We chose the theme of ‘smart’ because due to the vast amounts of wealth that have been acquired due to their robbery and they will obviously dress like smart rich men but each has their own variation.

Falco Tulwin- he is a very smart person in head knowledge but you are not able to see this in what he wears his idea of smart is very casual and he would normally wear jeans and a t-shirt with a hooded jacket this is his normal attire and stresses his personality of a relaxed but careful approach.

Schwartz Kepp-he is the personality borderline between smart casual and normally wears slim black jeans, and a smart top and this emphasises his personality which of a ruthless but relaxed nature.

Koby Johnson-he is a very street-smart character and is was the mastermind behind the whole robbery in which the characters successfully robbed $250,000,000 dollars so as you can see this character dresses the smartest and where’s a smart black trouser and a smart black top this emphasizes this characters personality and strikes him as a smart, ruthless and careful character.

Prop Design

Prop Guns, Blueprints and Van we have chosen this props to emphasize the effect of the feature film and give a hint to the audience what the whole film’s genre is going to be like.

Main task: Budget

Budget

Travel

Seen as we have to travel to record our 2 minute film opening at the Pentagon Car Park in Chatham we felt the best idea for this was to get the train there. We need to go from Rainham Station - Chatham Station with a return as we need to get home after a long day of filming. Also seen as we're all 16 and above we now need to pay for an adult ticket, so it will be a little more expensive but I had a chat with my group and we're all willing to pay that little bit extra. An individual ticket from Rainham - Chatham is £3.60 which then we're going to have to times by three as we have three people within our group.

  Total Price: £10.80

Props

We will be using various props during the filming such as: Prop Guns, Ski Masks, Black Gloves and a Gym Bag. We will need Prop Guns x3 which will all be safety tested which you will see on the blog to show that they are 100% safe and not active. Luckily for us we all have a Prop Guns available and ready so Prop Guns will not affect the budget. Ski Masks will need to be used during filming, I have found a few Ski Masks online on Ebay, which I will be in charge of purchasing. Yet again seen as their are three of I will need to purchase three, each individual Ski Mask costs £1.99 each, So if we times that by three we get £5.97. We will also need Black Gloves during the filming, I have found some black gloves on Ebay at £1.00 each, so if I times that by three obviously we get a total of £3.00. During filming we will need a Gym Bag to store the Prop Guns in. Fortunately for us Owen has his own Gym Bag which he will allow us to use for no charge so the Gym Bag will not affect the budget.

Total Price: £8.97

Equipment

The equipment we are going to be using for our 2 minute film opening is a HD 1080p Pro Camera and Tripod. The camera we are going to be using will be provided by Owen free of charge so thankfully that will not affect the growing budget. The same thing goes for the Tripod, as yet again Owen will be provided us with a good working Tripod free of charge. Credit to Owen there.

Food

As we will be filming for quite a time we're bound to get hungry, to our advantage there is a 24 hours a day McDonalds in the high street which will come to a good use. It's hard to say what we're going to quite get at the moment but I'm estimating about £5.00 per meal.

Total Price: £15.00 (estimate)

Overall Total Price: £34.77

Class Analysis of Opening to a Film- “Definitely Maybe” - Owen Bates

Class Analysis of Opening to a Film- “Definitely Maybe”

Titles

00.00-00.20: Opening to film with the distributor company ‘Universal’- Logos used.

00.20- 00.30: Production Company who made the film- logo showed after the distributer’s logo in this case.

00.35- 00.38: “Universal Pictures presents”

00:46- 00:48: “In association with studio canals”

00:59- 01:01: “A working title production”

01:41-01:45: “An Adam Brooks film” – normally the producer or director of films name. Images sliding across screen and carried text away

01:47- 01:53: Title of film appears- “definitely maybe”

01:54- 1:57: Actor one “Ryan Reynolds”... Next actor appearing (Starts off with main characters name)

01:57- 02:00: Actor two “Isla Fisl”

Mise-en scene

At start of actual film we see a formal looking envelope of which gives a business feel due to the professional look of it. It gives this impression as we see the common things on an envelope such as the address and name of the individual – in this case the main character of the films name “Mr William Hayes”. You can tell that it comes from a courier company as there is a sticker on the top left of the envelope and in the centre of the envelope where the address is- there is a return address for 3 people which can tell that it may have come from a solicitor. This is being filmed in New York as stated by the address.

00:42: We first see the character and his surroundings of which is filmed in an office building/tower. The main character is dressed up formally as he has his shirt and tie on which could suggest his professionalism and he is also surrounded by sky scrapers suggesting the business district he could be in. He also has the typical things we would expect to see in an office such as the use of a laptop, stationary such as pens, post-it notes and of course the office chair. Big windows and blinds also give the office impression. He has his own office

00:52: Sets up the film as we see a divorce letter and see potentially his wife’s name – Sarah Hayes.

01:02: Another lady appears and is dressed up formally too- get a glimpse of the background.. See other workers. We get the impression he is quite high up in his job as when we see other co- workers in the background of the shot of the lady, they are working in one room where as he has his own.

01:23: Interior to Exterior. We see the main character walking out of the base of the office and get a hint of the time of day- in this case midday/afternoon. Other pedestrians walking round to give the city feel along with the sheer amount of buildings and towers

01:34: The use of props- headphones and music player. Has a slightly more casual appearance as he leaves the office.

01:45: Yellow Taxis significantly imply that this film is being filmed in New York City as they are rarely seen elsewhere. New prop used of which is a bag he has loosely hanging off of his shoulder.

01:58: Building landmarks added to give the city feel.

Sound

00:04: Universal logo showed along with their trademarked sound. Most logos or companies don’t use sound in their logo.

00:33- 00:40: Sound Bridge. Get the sound of the office bridging from logo into the first scene- background noise of office heard. – Ambient Sound. Also hear the sound of footsteps- people walking round. “Hi Will, a package for you” is said – introducing the character to us as dialogue is used before we see the envelope. Hear a Foley sound as we hear the thump of the envelope as it is put on the desk – momentous thing and suggests the importance of the object- also draws the attention of the viewer instantly.

00:42- 00:45: Pressing on top of his pen, constantly clicking it which could suggest his boredom. Throws his pen down on the table and we hear the sound of it hitting the desk.

00:51: Foley sound of him opening the envelope and grabbing hold of the paper and pulling it out the envelope.

00:53: Voice over of the main character- will tell us the back story or the set-up of the story “I don’t think anyone on their wedding day imagines they would be 46% of that doesn’t live happily ever after”. Internal narrator.

01:06: Colleague tells his he Quaker oats accounts but he’s not happy about it because on this day he got his divorce papers through to him. Not worried too much about this account, more worried about his divorce. Blunt towards the colleague of his.

01:16: Talks about how he hates his job- his job feels like a prison sentence to him. “I never thought I’d spend my days, weeks and years, in an advertising agency trying to figure how to make kids eat captain crunch instead of fruit loops. But Tuesdays and Fridays are my favourite days, I get out of work early and go pick up my daughter mia from school. It’s a great feeling that you find the right track to go with the day. I have found the absolute perfect song.”

Background noise goes and the music kicks in as the main sound.
Plays wrong music first- rap music then clicks for next track- The track used for the titles. Use of piano for the introduction, helps create a relaxed atmosphere

Camerawork

00:40- 00:45 – CU of Envelope. Medium Close up (MCU) of main character- Get an idea of location, in this case- the office.

00:45- 00:48 - Cut to title on a black screen background.

00:48- 00:54 - Another CU of envelope again. Camera tilts up to show characters face. Also in CU. Could be a reaction shot too as it shows his expression as he opens the envelope up.

00:55- 00:59 - POV shot of the letter, understand what the letter is about (divorce papers). Gives an understanding of story. Camera pushing in towards the letter

00:59- 01:01: Cut to titles again on dark screen background.

01:01- 01:02: Cuts back to master shot of MCU/MS of him in the office. Again a reaction shot.

01:02 – 01:06- MCU of women that’s speaking to main character. She’s excited about the contract they have got given to do.

01:06- 01:09 – CU of main character again. Cut back to him, can see his sarcastic smile and that he’s not too bothered about this new contract

01:09 - 01:18 – Master shot of him again sitting at his desk. Long due to the narration

01:18- 01:21 - Wide Shot (WS) of him in his office. Gives you more information about his environment.

01:21- 01:25 – Cut to our first exterior shot. Pan to left, showing the office then him walking out of it, moves to a tracking shot of him walking towards the camera- Backwards dolly or reverse tracking.

01:26- 01:30 – Cut to OTSS, BCU of character putting headphones in. Arcs from one ear to other ear, showing his surroundings as it happens.

01:30- 01:33- Reverse angle shot from back of him to front of him. CU of character. Filmed at a slightly lower angle. Hand held camera, moving backwards as he walks.

01:33- 01:34 – CU of his arm/hands with music player in his hands- the significant object.

01:34- 01:35 - Shot reverse- Shot and a reaction shot to music beginning

01:35- 01:36 - Reverse shot to music player

01:36- 01:37 - Reverse shot to character

01:37- 01:38 - Reverse shot to music player (slow- mo. used)

01:38- 01:47 - Split screen of different shots to show credits and titles to film. OTSS of him in one frame. See a taxi cab- multiple split screen shot. MCU of him crossing the road, tracking shot.

01:47- 01:56 - Split screen pushes clips out of way. CU of his head, low angle shot used.  BCU of him in the city, crowd behind

01:56- 02:00 - Tracking shot of him walking across road. Foot shot of him walking and shot of footpath sign

Class Analysis of Maybe, Definetley -Junior Adekunle

Class Analysis of Maybe, Definitely
Titles
00-20 seconds - straight at the beginning of the film we see Production Company’s logo at the beginning.
00:20-00:32- the production company that is responsible for the film in question.
00:32-00:37- spacing between different titles are not rushed and are slowed are a little bit.
00:46-00:48- another title introduced lasts 2 seconds.
00:59-01:01- another introduction of the production company linked with making the film
1:41- another title showing the directors or producers name.
1:41-1:45- titles slowed as they go across the screen.
1:45-1:53- the title of the movie is now shown and has been prolonged.
1:54-1:57-actor 1 is shown this is normally the main character
1:57-2:00- another actors name is shown normally less important than the first character’s name shown.
Mise-en-Scene
At the start of the real footage of the film we see a formal envelope which gives the impression of a business and sets the location of the film. The envelope also shows that it is delivered by a messenger meaning the letter is definitely something to do with business, on the letter we are able to see the main characters name so by 40 seconds we know where the film is located, who the main character is and that it is business related. The envelope also has 3 names on the envelope meaning it could come from a solicitor meaning the letter could be very important as it has the names of three people on it.
The office is shown meaning we are able to see that there is something business related inside the movie and we are able to see where the main character is normally located, by the clothes he is wearing we are able to see he belongs in the office as he is as formal as the office looks. He is wearing a Blue Formal Shirt and Tie; this signifies how accustomed to the office the character is. There are also skyscrapers shown this can signify that the characters office may be located inside the business district. 1:02- 1:06- we see a smartly dressed woman and she signifies that there is a whole big company and not only one office containing the main character. We also see other co-workers walking around behind the woman this can reinforce the idea of the character being one of the hierarchy in this business as an open-plan office normally contains the low down the hierarchy system order and normally a one person office is reserved for managers, CEO, Chief Executives etc.
1:23-1:34-we follow the character from interior to exterior as the building shown can reinforce the idea of him working in the business as most buildings are located in big grand buildings. 00:33-00:37- we hear footsteps coupled with the previous sound gives a sense of people together somewhere and one is walking to see another and either talk to them or give them something. Sounds up to now are in the world of the character and gives us a sense of what the character is feeling
00:37-00:40- a loud drop sound is made as a letter is dropped onto a table this draws the attention of the audience as it can show the importance of the letter and can gives a sense of something bad coming from the letter.

1:22-1:33-the background noise normally leaves as he wears his headphones.
1:33-1:38-he accidentally plays the wrong song and this could signify how much mistakes are made in his life.
1:38-2:00- the perfect song he picks is very cheerful which is very contrasting to the immediate theme that was set in the first few seconds of the opening.
Camerawork
00:39-00:41- the first shot in the film was a close-up of the envelope this shot is really effective because it can draw the audience’s attention and makes them interested in the film right from the beginning and it also gives the audience an impression of what the movie is going to be like because of the use of an explosive close- up shot it may signify action in the movie
00:43-00:46- this shot is a medium close up and give us the reaction of the character to the envelope he is about to receive this is effective for drawing in the audience’s attention to see his reaction  to the package delivered.
00:48-00:50- in this shot there is another close up on the envelope and the camera is tilted upwards this can draw the audience’s attention in as they may feel something important is within the envelope.
00:50-00:52-during this shot we can see a close-up to the characters reaction at the sight of the envelope this makes the audience engage with the character and immediately start building a positive or negative relationship with him.
00:55-00:59-during this shot there is a strong POV close-up shot and the camera starts pushing in this is an effective opening as it draws in the audience’s attention.
01.01-During this shot we see a master shot as this is the regular shot used within the film opening and is used effectively in introducing the character to the audience.
01.02-1.06- a medium close-up is shown effectively to introduce more of the character to the audience.
01.06-01.08-there is a medium close up and close up shown showing the audience more of the characters and the characters emotions
01.09-01.17-we again see the master shot and this again reintroduces us to the character and again keeps the audience interested
01.21-01.25-an exterior shot is shown is this part of the opening and we are able to see where the character is located and gives the audience a sense of the characters environment and the camera moves to the left with a pan and then becomes a tracking shot this keeps the audience interested as the variety of camera angles can mean action could be on the way.
01.26-01.30 –the camera does a small arc from the one of the character’s ears to another signifying what the character is doing  we also see a reverse angle shot which puts us in front of the character giving us an idea of what the character is feeling after the character has left work and how he is feeling.
01.30-01.32- there is a low angle shot used at this point during the film which can draw the audience’s attention into the film because it can signify the character may have a weakness as low-angle shots are normally used to create this.
01.33-01.34-a shot reverse-shot is used to portray his reaction to the wrong music being played from his music player
01:34-01:35-another shot reverse shot is used to portray the characters reactions
01:36-02:00-we are now behind the character and we have gone into a split screen of the character this is quite effective because it draws the audience’s attention and they build an immediate relationship with the character.
We also have a split-screen medium tracking shot of the character walking across the streets of New York and we have a sense of what the day is like in New York
We also see a close-up of his head as he walking down the street but this is used to show a grand landmark so it is a landmarks shot and gives the audience a sense of where the character us living.
We have another tracking shot of the character walking across the streets of America and we also have a foot shot of the character and a crowd shot showing how busy normal days in America can be.

These camerawork techniques have made the movie opening very effective because the different angles that have been used have drawn in the audience’s immediate attention and already have the audience building some type of relationship with the character.
