Evaluation: Junior Adekunle

1.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (E.g. comparison nine frame analyses of your film and an influential film

One of the ways we have made our main task is the use of the enigma code I believe we did this very effectively because in our main task we made sure to show elements of the film but not too much and we believe there was strong enigma code as the characters were meeting because we did not include dialogue this adds to the effect because the audience does not have an idea as to what the characters are talking about this keeps the audience interested because they want to solve the enigma code we have entered to the movie we believe this compares well to real life media because all good movies have an enigma code entered into them which the audience become desperate to solve the longer it goes on.

In our film we have incorporated two cultural codes as we have two characters that come from two different backgrounds first we have Schwartz Kepp who is a person from a very high class background and recently graduated from doing computer science at Harvard in the USA. we made his character like this so we could include the culture of rich people can do crime as in today society people believe only poor or lower class commit most of the crimes which is a good claim but we just wanted to show that whichever background you come from you can still get involved in crime.

The other cultural code come from our other character which is koby Johnson he is a stereotypical representation as he is poor, black and involved in crime. He grew up coming from a very poor background and he saw crime as the only decent way to make sure that he could get a good standard of living. He represents the black people involved in crime not because they enjoy it but because it is their only way in their minds to have a good life.

I feel by incorporating two representations one that challenges society’s view and one that embraces its views makes the film better and more worth watching.

Frame 1: After our group carefully analysed both our influential movies including the Italian Job and Ocean’s Eleven we decided that we were going to open our task with two company like names as this what happened at the beginning of both our influential films in this case Equinox Productions is the company associated with the production of the film and Neon Lion Distributors are responsible for the distribution of the movies. We feel the two products add a nice professional effect to our film task. Ocean’s eleven only had one company in charge of their production and distribution which was Warner Bros. whereas the other 2 influential films we watched had 2 production companies at the start so we made sure to incorporate 2 of these into our main task as we wanted to make sure that the Crime and Heist film we make would be identical to those produced before them and actually look like a real life media product.

Frame 2: This is our distribution company and we feel the lion Logo adds a professional feel to this logo we also added a lion roaring sound just to make the logo more realistic and believable this was chosen to distribute rather than having one company that does both like our influential film’s we made sure to have more than one company involved in our film task again adding to the professionalism of our main task and even though our influential film ocean’s eleven had one company Warner Bros. which was in charge of their production and distribution but in most of the crime and heist films they had more than one company involved so we made sure to incorporate this into our main task against trying to make it look like a real life media product.

Frame 3: In our influential film Ocean’s Eleven they put their title toward the beginning of their movies so we as a group decided to put our title at an early stage of our movie like the way they do in our influential film and we feel this worked efficiently and was not too premature and took some gloss away from the movie. The title has grimy sort of look to it to emphasize the genre of our movie and we feel this helped the audience to understand the genre of movie that we were showing.

Frame 4: In our influential film they put their title before they put the companies they were associated with so again as a group we made sure to follow the timelines that the movie follows and we feel the timeline they us is parallel to ours again to make our media task like that of a real media product. Also in our influential film they made sure to setup the story very early and did this effectively by showing the characters on their way to a meeting so I believe that we did this effectively and we were also able to setup the story really well and form the beginning I feel we did this effectively because we were able to setup the story really well but without having to tell the full story this is good because we were then able to add enigma codes and different representations into our film opening.

Frame 5: in our influential Film Ocean’s Eleven they had a front shot of the character and another company that was associated with the production was shown at the top left and we as a group decided to make sure we incorporated this into our own film task we feel our genre is created in the same way as you have a shot of a very dodgy looking character which creates the genre of crime and we made sure to include this shot I our film as we felt that it would also create the genre of crime and we feel we have effectively created the genre of crime.

Frame 6: After carefully reviewing our influential Films we realized there was always a shot of two characters talking to each other and the shot of the two characters talking to each other would be shown at the same time so we made sure to include this in our film task to add to the feeling of it being a crime and heist film but to further we added a security camera outlook to it and then added a black and white effect to make it that much better and again give the audience a feel of what the whole movie is going to be about. In our influential film they normally positioned the titles in the middle or towards the bottom left of the screen and the writing would be in a normal sized white font we made sure to copy this but we made changes as we felt the titles we very important in setting up for the audience what the genre of movie was going to be about and I believe the ones included in our main task as they are quite big can add to the genre.

Frame 7: In our influential movies we saw that there was always a shot establishing where the characters were meeting rather than were the whole story is based so we have done both and clarified to the audience not only where the characters are based and live but also where the meeting is taking place and I feel we have done this very effectively. In both our influential films to add to the sense of it being a crime genre film they made to sure film to film in quite open spaces with often no people to add to the sense of crime and secrecy so when we filming we had to make sure to pick a big open space with little or no people and I feel we did this well and not only this I believe that the state of the location we picked itself suggests the sense of crime as the place was not in the best condition and it was quite ominous which adds to a sense of cri me but this also creates another enigma code as the audience will wonder why we were meeting in this kind of place.

Frame 8: This is a shot establishing shot to give the audience a sense of where the characters are meeting and where they based and we feel we have done this to good effect as the location scout I wanted to make sure that the location we picked to film in was going to add a good effect to the whole movie and unlike our preliminary task I think we picked a location that added again to the professionalism of our movie added and made It look like a real media product. Also in our influential film they introduce the characters by giving each a small cameo in their opening and each character is given a 20 second cameo this was effective and this gave the audience a small bit of time to meet the characters I believe we also did this well we gave each character a slightly longer cameo but we still feel this was effective as the audience was able to meet the characters we created a kind of enigma codes because we only introduced them by giving them long and varied camera shots but we did not include dialogue so the audience met the characters but they do not the basic details about them this is good because this enables us to move this enigma code and even stretch towards the end of the movie and maybe even couple it with other enigma codes.

Frame 9: In our influential movies the title always seemed too stick to a certain character and for a short while move with them so I feel we had to incorporate this into our own film task as it makes our film similar to that of our influential film ocean’s eleven again making our product look like a real media product and it adds to its professionalism. In our influential film they had some music playing throughout their opening and they did this effectively so that it made sure to add to the sense of the crime genre so we made sure to make sure that the music supported the film well enough to support the film and create the sense of crime so as composer I had to make sure the music was the perfect for the film and I believe we did this effectively.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups? (E.g. comparison stills from your film and the wider media)

Who or what is being represented?

We feel that in our film that we represent many different social groups within the youth culture but we feel the social culture that we can truly say we portrayed is that of young rich criminals this a social group which consists of rich young kids who have a good educational background or have a lot of money but still choose to follow the life of crime as they have other options to follow in life with the money they have but we also feel we portray another social group which is that of criminals from poor backgrounds as we feel we have two characters from two ends of the social class ladder.

The character that we believe portrays that of young rich criminals when you first see Schwartz you can see that he is always the brains behind the operation and that he must come from a good background due to the way he dresses. The Background of Schwartz was that he was doing Computer Science in Cambridge University even though he hails from German decent so this shows that he was of good background because in addition to his smarts he also had parents with a lot of money so with a life like this it was a wonder why he chose the life of crime he uses his computer smarts to hack into the bank frequencies to shut down their security making their heists that much more full proof. below is the picture of a rich criminal that Schwartz in our movie represents.

We also have another character in our movie that we feel perfectly represents his chosen social group this is the poor black criminals social group know many people feel this is a stereotype and not really a social group but this a big social group especially in America and we feel the character of Koby Johnson we feel represents this social group to the max as he is from the same ilk this social group from the gangster streets in Brooklyn, NY and he did not have much money growing up as his mum was locked up for cocaine dealing so he was independent from a young age so he himself sold drugs too to make enough money to buy food for the day and we feel his whole character Background is relevant and represents this social group finely.
This is the social group we feel the character of Koby Johnson represents well as he is from the same poor background where there are most cases where crime is the only option available and this was the same for the character of Koby so we feel his character is perfect to represent this social group.
below is a picture of a black criminal from a poor background which Koby represents.

As you can see from the images above we wanted to make sure that our characters represented their chosen background properly and we feel we did this well. the character on the bottom is Eazy-E from the movie Straight Outta Compton and we feel he compared to Koby in our movie because they are both from poor backgrounds and are both involved in crime. you can see from both characters that even though they are rich they still try to make sure that keep some of their urban style this is done with Koby by putting him in a big puffy jacket and done with the character below by adding a cap on top his more expensive clothes.

The character on the top is a footballer who has been caught up for breaking the law many times he also from a high social status and this is why we feel he compares to liam's character as he is also rich but has also found his way into the crime scene they also have similar types of clothing as the character wears a Nike hat and liam is wearing a Nike jacket they also both have serious faces again showing which class they may come from.

Who is the preferred audience for this representation?

We believe that representations shown in our film will relate to our target audience which is the 16-24 age group as we have to characters from two ends of the social order and this means that the audience no matter what social class they are from can enjoy and relate to the movie and what it is all about. we feel that Koby attracts the audience from the lower classes as he is from a poor background whereas Schwartz is more of a higher class kind of individual meaning the higher classes can also relate to the movie.

What are they doing?
the characters are meeting up and planing something although we wanted to make sure not too much was shown in the early parts of the movie as we wanted to create a sense of mystery around the characters and make the audience more interested in the movie right from the get go. there is a scene in the movie where the characters are seen exchanging a handshake and we made a decision to not make it just any handshake and we made it one which represented the cultural background of Koby as he is a character we wanted to fully represent his background.

As you can see from the image below we can see people who are from the same background and this is normally how they would shake each other after they have met we wanted to make sure that we did not miss anything out and we also felt the handshake gave us a strong opportunity to let Koby show his character and where he is from we also learned from similar films that they also used this as a way to establish the background of a character.

Is their activity presented as typical, or atypical?
we wanted to make sure that our characters did what other characters of their age would we wanted to make sure that even though they were criminals that they were still young teenagers at heart and still did things that teens their age would do so for example they were grooming their hair during the movie as this is something that characters of their age would do. most of the things our characters did in the movie was presented as typical because we wanted the characters to appeal to our target audience which is the 16-24 category.

Are they conforming to genre expectations or other conventions?
we feel that our characters had to conform to genre expectations to make the film as unique as it was by making them look like the typical teenager they were able to stress what the film was about which was young criminals who became involved in crime but were still young teenagers at heart.

Why are they present? What purpose do they serve? What are they communicating by their presence?
we feel that the characters were present because they carried what the whole movie was about which was two young criminals which came from two opposite found their way into crime and we feel that with the way we made sure the characters portrayed this was the reason why they needed to be present. another reason they are present is because they both represented to different worlds of social classes and this made sure that we could have so many varied audiences due to this fact and we feel this a vital reason the characters were present.

Where are they?
they are inside of a car park this we felt was needed as it is normally somewhere criminals would normally meet in busy places but in the places were nobody was near enough to found out what they were doing.

Are they represented as natural or artificial?
we wanted to represent the character as natural as possible because we felt this was the best way to adhere to our target audience we felt the more natural the characters were the more the audience would relate to them we felt that if we made them look artificial it would be hard for the relationship to be built between our target audience and the characters and we feel that the relatability of the characters to our target audience is one of the big pluses of the movie.

3.) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? (E.g. voice over analysis of the institutions that appears at the start of your film and the other titles)

This is a link to the video in which I explain what titles and companies we have put in and why.

Our film if it was real was going to be an American film so we feel it would be produced and distributed by Warner Bros. who would be in charge of the distribution and production of our movie but they could also do it in association with other companies. The reason we feel a big company like Warner Bros. would produce our movie is because they seem to have a big interest in action and crime and heist films as they have a hand in producing each of the influential films we watched these including the bank job, The Italian job, and Ocean’s Eleven so we feel that if our main task were to be a real media product they would take a real interest in this movie because it applies to and attracts our target audience meaning it would make a lot of money as our target audience which is the 16-24 age group we feel would watch this movie due to the relevance of the characters, most crime and heist films have characters that do not relate to the young age group and because of this they don’t really go to see these movies but when the characters are relatable to them they are much more likely to watch a movie like this and this would entice a company like Warner Bros. as they know a movie like this would make money.

We feel that a lot of media institutions would be interested in our movie because it it has the conventions of  a professional crime and heist film and we also feel that they would be interested in our media product because it relates really with our target audience really well as it character has characteristics which would register with our target audience and this is a big reason why I feel companies such as Paramount, Warner Bros etc would be interested in our film as we believe our 16-24 age group would love our movie.

We also feel that it is not only the characters that make the movie better but also the surroundings and locations used as this where people of the characters age would normally meet and hang out in groups so we feel this also makes people watch the film relate to it meaning that we are beginning to attract more of our target audience.

4.
Who would be the audience for your media product? (E.g. focus group video and audience profile)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iV_7diy1g3E

above are three videos where i have find out people views on our film they are from three different age groups and they also give an insight into what they like to watch at the cinema as well.

The Audience we feel for Main Task/Short Intro would be the teenager to young adult age group so the ages of 16-24 and we feel they would watch our film because of the relevance of the characters to their age group as we made sure that each character had characteristics that this age group would have and could relate to for example, when they go up in the elevator they do their hair something that this age group would do as they all care about their appearance and like to look good wherever they go a characteristic we made sure to give to our characters,

We also feel that the characters were relevant to the audience due to what they wearing as we made sure to dress them in the current styles that the 16-24 age group would wear so for Schwartz he wore skinny black jeans with Nike janovski’s a style that our target audience would wear and this can even range to skaters of this age group meaning that all subcultures within the age group have some relatability to the movie. The other character Koby wears a designer white polo with skinny dark blue jeans again this relates to this age group but the polo can also relate other age groups and audiences because it is smart and it is a slightly more mature item of clothing he also wears a thick black jacket again this relatable to our target audience as this is something that they would wear.

The character’s movement and actions in the main task we feel is relatable to our target audience for example, the two characters do a handshake that our target audience especially guys would do and we planned carefully to make sure that everything the characters did in the movie was centered around our target audience but also making sure it applied to other age groups and audiences to.

Dolapo Shittu

17 years of age

African American

Interests- Love, Fashion, Hair, Makeup, Clothes

Music- R&B, POP, HIP-HOP

Hobbies- Likes to sing and Dance

What does she like to watch in the cinema?

Love& Romance, Action, Crime and Heist movies.

This is Dolapo Shittu she now lives in Virginia, USA having previously living in Washington D.C. and she is a typical girly girl and likes to use make-up and does her hair regularly even though she is the stereotype of a girly girl when she visits the cinema she always likes to watch action or crime and heist films but she also like to watch love and Romance movies, this is why we aimed our film task at this age group because we know that both girls and guys will watch our film task. She likes to watch movies on her I-phone with her Netflix app as she likes to watch these movies in her own convenience but she will if she likes the trailer go to the cinema to watch new movies.

Dolapo likes to watch these romantic movies with her Boyfriend and her friends she likes to do this because she feels it is better watch movies with friends rather than being alone she also likes this because if there is a sad moment in the movie she can share her emotional moments with the people she likes to share this moment with her closest friends she likes to watch films at home on Netflix because she doesn’t want to make the long trip down to the cinema when she already has films at home she likes to watch movies with her friends because she feels it makes the film more special and enjoyable.

Dolapo will only make the trip to the cinema if the trailer grabs her attention and makes her want to watch it that’s why we feel she would like her film because our film grabs your attention right form the first minute.

We also feel Dolapo as we feel it would relate to her demographics she can relate to the character of Koby Johnson as they are from the same ethnic background they also are about the same age meaning she can relate with the character more. She is a frequent movie goer and fits into our chosen age group of 15-24 so we feel she is a person that would definitely watch and then recommend it to her friends.

Matt Wren

17 years old

White English

Interests- football, sport, gym, video gaming

Music- Hip-hop, Rap,

Hobbies- Likes to sing and dance.

What films does he watch in the cinema?
Normally likes to watch Crime and heist films, Sport movies, Documentaries, cartoon movies and silent movies.

This is Matt Wren he lives in Gillingham, Kent and we feel he would watch our movie because  he normally likes to watch movies like this as he enjoys movie that provide him with a sense of mystery and because of this i feel he would like our movie because we make sure there is a sense of mystery surrounding the characters from the beginning and because of this I feel Matt would enjoy our movie and it  would grab his attention right from the beginning.

Normally Matt would go to the Cinema with his mates as he feels it makes the movie experience more special and it is more enjoyable as his mates are into the same things he is. He prefers to stay at home and watch the movies on his PS4 with the Netflix app he is happy there is a synergy between the two companies as he enjoys video gaming and finds it easier as he can watch movies on it too. Matt would only go to the cinema if the movie trailer really grabbed his attention or if the movie was linked to one of his interests and that's i think he would like the movie that we have made.

We also feel that Matt would be able to relate to Schwartz as he is rich aswell but he also a rebel and gets in trouble in school quite a lot and because of this we feel he would really like the movie and would want to watch it. it is also perfect for him as he is in our target audience age group of 16-24 age group.
5. How did you attract/address your audience? (E.g. annotated analysis of your video)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTNXW-vKPT4

This is a link to the video of me annotating our video and explaining why it would attract and address our audience.

6.) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? (E.g. photos of technology taken during construction with evaluation of what has been learned)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBMajL5CTaU

this is a video on what technology processes we used but also how i progessed in the use of these technologies.

This is a link to my answer and what I feel I have improved on.

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? (Video comparison of the preliminary film and main task with voiceover)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7Ib92zmJzM

these are links to two videos where i compare the preliminary to the main task.

In this video I outline the differences between our preliminary and our main task and the amount of things that we have improved on since the preliminary.

My roles in the main task were Director, Writer, Marketing and Location Scout and Set, Costume and Prop Design. I feel that I have improved within these roles vastly since the preliminary task as we feel as a group the preliminary task was not up to scratch and if we were going to do this again we would change a lot of things.

As a director in the main task, I felt my skills in directing have improved as the acting performances were a lot better and the audience were able to get a sense of what was going and what genre of film this would be in the preliminary the acting performances were poor and audiences were not able to tell exactly what was going on in our preliminary task but I feel my directing has improved as I have made sure the actors including myself were up to scratch and making sure everything the characters did make the movie clearer and the audience would be able to understand the movie. I also learnt that being a director starts long before the movie as I had to make sure that everything included in the movie form the location to the clothes the actors were wearing was fully planned out as i believed that to avoid the small mistakes we made in our preliminary task we had to make sure everything was planned out correctly and that everyone knew what they had to do i believe that due to this we had a better movie compared to the preliminary task as more though went behind everything we did and everything about the movie relates to our target audience of 16-24 year olds. I believe that in the role of the director I improved not only in my managing skills but also in my timekeeping and organisational skills.

As the Writer, I wanted to make sure that the movie I wrote was going to be something realistically possible but also at the same time it was going to have a clear plot and it was something that the audience would not have to watch the whole thing to get an idea of what the movie was about and I feel I have wrote something that is clear and would attract our target audience. I wanted to make sure that the content and the story of the movie was not going to be boring as I wanted the film to grab the audience's attention right from the beginning and i believe this was done by making sure that the mystery surrounding the two characters would start right from the beginning and I believe this had the desired Effect.

As I was in charge of Marketing, I made sure to research into our target audience which is the 16-24 age group and what they like to watch in the cinema that is why we are confident that through this research we have learned that this age group likes our genre of movies and their relatability to them makes them even more inclined to watch it. because the 16-24 year old age group

As i was the composer i had to make sure the Music we found was appropriate for our genre of music which was crime and i had to make sure it was copyright free which it was i feel the music was good and really added something to the film and in itself created a sense of crime

Main Task: Evaluation (Liam Taylor)

For all of the 9 frames here the order goes from:

·         Row 1: Frames 1-3

·         Row 2: Frames 4-6

·         Row 3: Frames 7-9

Frame 1

The Warner Bros production logo appears at the start of the film, but we hear the bridging sound of what can only be described as a male character speaking in an echoing room. We also hear the echo of footsteps coming closer to the microphone.  The Warner Bros. Pictures logo also displays the fact that the company is a part of the AOL Time Warner Company. The font and image used in the title is really iconic and a lot of people will instantly recognise them due to the size and reputation of the company. The mysterious male voice and the echo of footsteps coming closer as the title is being displayed interacts with, and engages, the viewer straight away.

Frame 2

The second frame shown develops sound and mise-en-scene.  We hear the rattle of a metal sound which sounds like a prison cell being opened, we then hear a males voice say "Lets go face the wall" which is being said whilst the movies productions company is being presented. At first we see a pretty dark empty room with just a small wooden chair and a window. A character later appears dressed in a beige boiler suit. This sound and setting the audience is introduced to from the very start suggests to me that the first scene is set within a prison, this is then confirmed when a female voice states "The purpose of this hearing to to determine whether or not you're likely to break the law again" matching the genre of the film which is crime.

Frame 3
In the third frame the main character is introduced through a mid shot  Daniel Ocean, we know this because he is asked to "state his name for the record" to which he replies with "Daniel Ocean" this creates characterization. We gather the fact that Daniel Ocean is the main character of the film as we are presented with his name right from the very start, also the fact that the camera is focused on him and him only in the first frame right up until frame 5 suggests this to the audience, which shows vital importance within this character as he is privileged with all the shots only showing him all the way up to shot number 5, which suggests to the audience he may be a central character.

Frame 4

Frame 4 shows a close up of Daniel Ocean, the camera is still focused on him and only him. The only difference is now the position of the camera is allowing the audience to look into his facial expressions and give more of a judgment and understanding.

Frame 5

Frame 5 is actually very important as it is a tracking shot of Daniel Ocean. The important aspect of this frame is that it tells the audience that Daniel Ocean was actually in fact in what can only be described as a prison, which explains the interrogation on Ocean in frames 3 and 4. Frame 5 helps to portray the genre of the film which is a crime thriller as prisons highly represent crime. Frame 5 also tells us that the first initial setting within 5 minutes of the film is within a prison.

Frame 6

Frame 6 is the first frame that displays an in movie title, the title states “WARNERBROS.PICTURES PRESENTS” Once again WarnerBros.Pictures title is presented to us, this shows there vital importance within the film. The title stays consistently next to the main character Daniel Ocean as he is walking through the gates. Parts of the title is highlighted in bold so it stands out and catches your eye, to garb the audiences eye not just focused on Ocean  but on the incoming titles as well.

Frame 7

Frame 7 is another frame that displays an in movie title. The title states “IN ASSOCIATION WITH VILLAGEROADSHOWPICTURES ANDNPVENTERTAINMENT” This once again like frame 6 shows the vital importance of this company within its contributions to the film. Parts of the title is highlighted in bold so it stands out and catches your eye, to garb the audiences eye not just focused on Ocean  but on the incoming titles as well.

Frame 8

Frame 8 is another frame that features a title which states “AJW/SECTIONEIGHT PRODUCTION” This once again like frame 6 and 7 shows the vital importance of this company within its contributions to the film. One of the main differences with this title is that the other titles presented within frames 6 and 7 were also features at the start whereas this title wasn’t, which suggests that this company did not have as much of an influence within the film than the other two companies presented at the start.

Frame 9

Frame 9 is another frame that features a title, however this title is different to those presented in frames 6, 7 and 8 as it does not display or promote a company but it displays the name of the film which is “Ocean’s Eleven” The title is presented quite interestingly as it is in the same font size as the other titles in the bottom right hand corner. The title is presented on a black screen which fades into what can only be described as a large city being viewed out at sea

Frame 1

The first frame is a productions company title. Like the Warner Bros. Pictures title in Ocean’s Eleven we try to engage out audience with sound and animation, however we took a different approach. We used more of an eye catching animation that displayed lots of bright light and movements which really the audiences eye, alongside this we used the same echo effect used in Ocean’s Eleven but put our own twist to it. We used an upbeat soundtrack which had an echo effect, to try and engage the audience into the title in the same way that Warner Bros. Pictures did in Ocean’s Eleven. The Warner Bros. Pictures in Ocean’s Eleven displayed the title text with an animation which was fade in, we tried to achieve something similar but different The Warner Bros. Pictures title was more elegant with it animation to the company logo whereas we took more of an eye-catching explosive displaying lots of bright colours and transitions which then shows the company logo “Eqinox Productions” he title is formatted as bold to further reach the audiences eye.

Frame 2

Frame 2 is another title that presents the distributions company within the film. The title is a more relaxed and calm title than the one of frame 1. However like frame 1 the title consist of colours that are bright and stand out, to help towards grabbing the audiences eye we used the fade in and fade out transitions. The title is formatted as bold to further reach the audiences eye.

Frame 3

Frame 3 is the first frame that shows an in movie title, the title states “Eqinox Productions Present” you may notice that this is a similar convention of the titles shown in Ocean’s Eleven and specifically in the Ocean’s Eleven 9 frame collage as frame number 6. This title is used to show the importance that Eqinox Productions has within the feature film. Another convention which we took inspiration from Ocean’s Eleven is the key focus right from the start on the main character, we tried to achieve this through only seeing one character between frames 3-5

Frame 4

Frame 4 is the second frame that features an in movie title, the title stating “In association with Monster House Productions & Waveshock Pictures” you may notice that this is a similar convention of the titles shown in Ocean’s Eleven and specifically in the Ocean’s Eleven 9 frame collage as frame number 7. This title is used to show the importance that Eqinox Productions has within the feature film. Another convention which we took inspiration from Ocean’s Eleven is the key focus right from the start on the main character, we tried to achieve this through only seeing one character between frames 3-5

Frame 5

Frame 5 is the third frame that features an in movie title, the title stating “A JBWRSIX Production” you may notice that this is a similar convention of the titles shown in Ocean’s Eleven and specifically in the Ocean’s Eleven 9 frame collage as frame number 8. This title is used to show the importance that Eqinox Productions has within the feature film. Another convention which we took inspiration from Ocean’s Eleven is the key focus right from the start on the main character, we tried to achieve this through only seeing one character between frames 3-5

Frame 6

Frame six is the fourth frame showing a title, however it is the most important title during the feature film. The title is frame 6 is a title of the movie titles name which in this case shows the title “Smash ‘N’ Grab” We took inspiration from one of the titles in the 9 frame collage of Ocean’s Eleven which was frame number 9. Frame number 9 shows a title displaying “Ocean’s Eleven” in text within the right hand corner. The title in frame number 9 starts off at a black screen then later fades into a city, we really liked the black screen title effect and used it but in our own way. Instead of having the title in small text at the bottom right side we through it would be best to have it in much larger text and in the middle to make it really stand out to the audience. We also used the “HACKED” font as it portrays our genre of a crime feature film.

Frame 7

Frame 7 is an interesting frame to look at as it is out of the ordinary. First off instead of having to cut between the two characters at this part of the feature film includes a split screen to show the two characters at the same time. Ocean’s Eleven uses a prison at the start of their film to further show the genre which is crime, we used this convention but in our own way by creating what appears to the audience as CCTV cameras. CCTV footage is heavily represents crime and the use of less frames per second also enthuses this. The CCTV footage shows the two characters in an elevator speaking on their mobile phones and neatening up their hair, this was used to portray the age range of the characters which is elder teenagers.

Frame 8

Frame 8 is the first frame that shows the character Koby Johnson clearly for the first time.

Frame 9

We see the two main characters in the movie named Koby Johnson (left) and Schwartz Kepp (right)

Question 2:  How does your product represent particular social groups?

During our opening the characters consist of young males, this is because we felt we could put a twist on most of the other social groups featured in films of a similar genre to us (heist and crime) Instead of having the typical wise, experienced middle-aged men we choose to base our characters upon the social group of young men between the ages of 16-19. The preferred for this representation is other young adults or late teenagers of the ages 16-19 as they can relate to the characters more so than people of another social group. We represent this through the fashion sense of the two young men features in our two minute opening. The characters in our main task are walking to meet each other, people of our targeted social group can relate to this as for many people of the social group walking is the main form of transport as many cannot drive yet. The activity of the characters is typical of the social group for example keeping up-to-date in terms of fashion and walking to meet each other, another typical activity we presented to represent the social group was checking and styling their hair. Young men typically take more pride in their appearance than a few other social groups such as middle aged men. The two young men shown in our main task are starting to conform to genre expectations in the way that they met in a location where no one else was which portrays secrecy, this convention is used in many heist films. This social group is present to show the activities and conventions related to the social group and the fact that the group can get up to atypical behavior such as planning a heist. The purpose of the chosen social group is to show and convey to the audience that not all people within the social group are cruel and act like a thug. By the presence of the two characters it shows that young men can be smart and mature as well as portraying our social group. The two characters are walking to meet in an empty car park, this location shows that the social group may not have the same sort of facilities as other social groups such as a secret room or hideout, they have to take care of business within the view of the public, but still in a secretive location. Both characters wore different clothing but of a similar style for example both characters were wearing jeans but of a different style as Swartz (blonde male) was wearing black skinny jeans, long khaki green parka coat and Nike Janoski Max trainers, similar but different to the picture on the left. However Koby (black male) was wearing blue jeans of a looser fit, black mountain jacket and black boots. Our costumes differ to our influential film Ocean’s Eleven as the men in Ocean’s Eleven are of a much older age and different social group. Another way we tried to represent our social group throughout the opening was during the elevator part of our opening where we witness the two young males looking at themselves in the mirror, styling their hair. This represents the social group of young male (16-19) as many young males stereo-typically will often take more pride and care with their appearance than someone of a much older social group. Another small way in which we represent our social group in the opening is the fact that the two characters were walking to the location of which they meet. Stereotypically not many young men between the ages of 16-19 will drive cars, we tried to hint and implement this into our opening.

Questions 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Link to my short commentated video explaining what media institutions would distribute my product and why: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gw_Apxo_r2A

Question 4: Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our Media product is likely to attract a age audiences from the ages of 15-24 as they are the most common age group that like action and crime films as studies by the MPAA. MPAA also shows us that the majority of our audience is likely going to be of the male gender, this is because women prefer drama rather than crime and action.

Here is a profile of someone who would enjoy our media product

About Samuel: Owen is a young 17 year old male. He has a passionate love for house music and even produces his own mixes, when his not creating a new mix he plays video games whilst listening to music. His favorite games are GTA 5 and Battlefield 4. Alongside these interests Owen in his free time likes to watch action films and in particular heist films such as The Italian Job but his all-time favorite is The Bank Job. The reason Owen would like our film is because it fits very much into his chosen genre and the fact that the story is based around characters of the same age group as him.

I think our film would appeal to Owen, as he seems to be a stereotypical young male, who enjoys experiencing lots of action and excitement. If we were to show this at him at the local cinema I personally think it would appeal to him and he would purchase a ticket
Q5. How did you attract/address your audience?

Question: 6) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Top left: The top left is my own personal USB memory stick, I used this to save the film opening during the editing stage and when it came to supplying. I didn't really learn anything whilst using this as I've used memory sticks for years and there was nothing more I needed to know.
Top Middle: This was the camera we used to record our main task with. During the filming process although my role didn't involve being cinematographer I did learn something. I often helped out with the thinking of shots to use in certain situations and learnt a variety of camera shots that could be put into good use.
Top left: The tripod you see in the top left is the tripod we used during the filming stage. I learnt how to properly assemble and disassemble the tripod effectively.
Centre left: These are the headphone I used during the editing stage of the main task, it was essential to use good headphones so we could make sure our audio is on point without any issues. I didn't really learn anything when it came to this as I have had years of experience with headphones and had nothing more to learn.
Centre middle: This is the PC I used to edit and complete the main task. It was a high powered computer with the right specifications for the job, I didn't really learn anything when it came to this technology as I've used computers from a very early age and know what I'm capable of when using them.
Centre right: This is an SD card used in the camera to store all of the unedited footage of the main task. When using this I learnt how to correctly insert the SD into the camera and how to get the footage from the SD and on to the computer to be edited.
Bottom left: This is an audio set which we didn't really use. We originally had a voiceover that we was going to use in our main  task but we scraped it. However I did learn something from using this technology such as how to record high quality audio and how to set the microphone up with the correct levels and settings.
Bottom right: This is the editing software I used during the editing stage of our main task. I have had experience of this software in the past so I didn't really learn much but I did learn how to create a split screen used in the CCTV footage part of our main task.

Q7 Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Looking back at the preliminary task that my group and I completed at the start of the year, I feel I have learnt a lot and my group has made some very good advancements since then. Click the link below for more detail.
