Individual Analysis:The Italian Job (2003)

Individual Analysis of The Italian Job (2003)

Titles

00:00-00:08- the name of the film is straight at the beginning this can be effective as it draws the audience’s attention in right from the start, this is different to the way films are normally done as the production companies name and associate production customers are shown first.

00:08-00:26:-we see the trademark paramount production stars and we finally see the production companies name, we also see their trademark camera pan as the camera moves down from a high angle position, the title is on the screen for a very long time and this can emphasize its importance.

00:26-00:32- we again see the name of paramount pictures but just the words below a running commentary of pictures.

00:32-00:40- we see another picture now and below we see the name of another production company called DE LINE PICTURES and they are shown second because they are owned by paramount pictures and worked with them in creating this film.

00:40-00:44- we see another picture that is flashed over from the right of the screen to the left and at the bottom we are able to see the name of the director of the film which in this case is F.Gary Gray.

00:44-00:48- the titles seem to have come to a 4 second spacing now and we are no able to see the name of the main character which is Mark Walhberg again with a picture flashing over the top but this time from the bottom of the screen towards the top of it.

00:48-01:03- we see two more names accompanied by the flashing images and pictures these names are Charlize Theron and Edward Norton we again see the name of the movie and it is now more emphasized as we now know who is involved in the film.

01:03-02:01- we see many more names again accompanied by flashing images and pictures displayed normally these names are less important to the first ones shown as they are the normally the most fundamental people in making this film, these names shown are 4 seconds apart meaning there has a planned spacing between them only the title of the movie and the production’s companies involved lasted longer this again was a planned way to emphasize their importance to the movie being made.
Mise-en-Scene
While each title to the movie is being played we see in the background pictures of places located in Milan, Italy and we, the audience, where exactly the movie is being made and gives the audience a little hint of what the movie could be about without giving to much away. We can also see when the titles are being played is a blueprint in which things are being written onto we see words such as ROUTE, MEN IN POSITION, BACK DOOR, FRONT DOOR ETC. This gives the audience a sense of what the whole movie is going to be about this can also bring the audience’s attention in straight away because we are able to see that there is something being planned and immediately want to know exactly what it is being planned, we see different parts of the blueprints as they are flashed across the screen behind the titles involved in the movie this keeps the audience interested as they are able to see something is being planned but because of the way it is shown sparingly the audience’s know a little about the film but not enough to lose interest. Parts of the blueprint are shown 4 seconds apart matching the timing of the titles.
Sound
00:00-00:26- we hear the trademark sound of the paramount pictures company and we then see their trademark logo with the trademark stars.

00:26-00:50- we are then able to hear faintly in the background accompanying the titles the sound of musical instruments playing this can add mysteriousness to the movie drawing in the audience’s attention in.

00:50-01:23- the music has now become louder and is being played at a faster pace this accompanied by more parts of the blueprint being revealed this can emphasize the importance of what is being shown by the blueprints this draws the  audience’s attention in even more meaning that they are not able to take their eyes off of the screen.

01:23-01:31- the drum is being beaten at a faster and heavier pace this can mean danger or action that is about to happen as the drum is normally used to signal rage, anger etc this again keeps the audience guessing as the music at the beginning was very slow and soulful but is now being played at a heavier and higher pace.

01:31-01:40- the drum beat is stopped again keeping the audience guessing as the music placed has slowed a little.

01:40-01:46-the music again is slowed.

01:46-02:00- the music seamlessly and explosively back into a higher paced and heavy beat as more revealing parts of the blueprint are shown this again manipulates the audience’s attention and keeps them interested.

Camerawork

00:26-02:00-as the titles are shown we can see a pushing in shot a low angle shot we see a few pans like right to left and bottom up to the top and we see a tracking shot each of these shots which are also kept in the frame well are effective because we see the blueprint being unveiled very effectively we can also see landmarks in the heart of Milan, Italy which again keep the audience interested in the film.

this film opening is very effective and keeps the audiences attention from the start all the way to the end which is the aim of every film and i hope that my group,s can be just as effective.
